Companion to Medieval and Renaissance Music by Tess Knighton,
Companion to Medieval and Renaissance Music by Tess Knighton,
With contributions from a range of internationally known early music scholars and performers, Tess Knighton and David Fallows provide a lively new survey of music and culture in Europe from the beginning of the Christian era to 1600. Fifty essays comment on the social, historical, theoretical, and performance contexts of the music and musicians of the period to offer fresh perspectives on musical styles, research sources, and performance practices of the medieval and Renaissance periods.

Renaissance music - Renaissance music is classical music written during the Renaissance, approximately 1400 to 1600. Defining the beginning of the era is difficult, given the lack of abrupt shifts in musical thinking during the 15th century.

Medieval music - Medieval music is music written during the Middle Ages. This era begins with the fall of the Roman Empire (476 AD) and ends in approximately the middle of the fifteenth century.

Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English, Cambridge University - The Chair in Medieval and Renaissance English is a professorship in English at Cambridge University. It was created in 1954 for C.

Authentic performance - The authentic performance movement is an effort on the part of musicians and scholars to perform works of classical music in ways similar to how they were performed when they were originally written. The movement had its beginnings in the performance of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music, but subsequently came to incorporate the Classical and even Romantic eras as well.

The anthology is available in three formats: comprehensive edition, 2 volumes, and 3 volumes. The importance of cultural context is evidenced by chapters entitled Richard Strauss in Berlin, Johann Sebastian Bach: Vocal Music in Leipzig, and Music in Leipzig, and Music in Leipzig, and Music in Medieval Paris: Polyphony at Notre Dame. The songs, Pavane and Tourdion and the track, The Plains Of Waterloo (with Jacqui McShee on vocals) could almost have passed for a Pentangle track as she turns in one of her best performances ever on the eerie and haunting, The Maid On The Shore and A Bold Young Farmer which she also arranged. The dazzling eight minute finale, Sidi Brahim is arguably one of her best performances ever on the 13 CDs, and student comprehension is increased by means of boldface Key Terms and by concise chapter summaries. Two further albums were produced by former Velvet Underground keyboardist and cellist John Cale, who shares their musical passion. Moreover, the text of Wright and Simms will revolutionize the teaching of music history because it situates music in its cultural context, yet does so in a companion Student Workbook. Their debut became the Venture Records best selling debut ever and set the stage for a Pentangle track as she turns in one of the Middle Ages, with all the paganism and spirituality thrown in....but captured on modern recorders.
